Integrating assessment for learning
There is a an Update circular on this theme available for download. Click on Update publication top-right of the homepage.
The Ofsted inspection framework for 2009 emphasises effective assessment practice and particularly 'realtime' assessment for learning activities to check and correct misunderstandings as they arise lesson by lesson. Transform learning from a passive to an active experience by drawing the learners into regular and effective participation in their own learning. Introduce a series of practical strategies to address the five key steps of 'assessment for learning' best practice highlighted by the Chief Inspector of Ofsted, Christine Gilbert as follows:
effective questioning
formative feedback
sharing marks schemes
self assessment
peer teaching
Discover a host of practical suggestions to introduce the above learning techniques and to promote independent learning. Harness new technology and develop workshop and intranet access to promote learning when and wherever learners choose. Empower learners and move towards full personalisation. Chapter Four of the textbook 'Outstanding teaching and learning 14-19' by Bradley Lightbody provides a full overview of assessment for learning and provides the framework for this training day.
Embedding equality and diversity
All individuals regardless of ethnic identity, religion, sexual orientation, disability or gender should feel a sense of welcome, safety and security and that their interests and needs are not only known but are being actively addressed. Ofsted will focus on actions rather than policies in relation to narrowing the well-documented achievement gaps between different groups of learners and actions to promote equality and diversity and to tackle discrimination. This course will present the latest data and issues related to underachievement and present a host of suggestions on how to embed effective practice into lessons and the overall life of your college. Note the related Collegenet circular 'Equality and Diversity' available for download with an overview of the Equalities Act 2010. Go to 'update publication' top-right of the home page.
The grade one lesson
This very popular programme has been fully updated to integrate Ofsted 2009 inspection criteria and Lifelong Learning professional standards for teaching and learning. The course is based on the newly published textbook, 'Outstanding teaching and learning 14-19' by Bradley Lightbody and provides practical guidance for what inspectors are looking for to award grade one. There are a host of practical examples of how to lift satisfactory teaching and learning into Ofsted grade one. The ideal group size is 20-25 but this course can also be successfully delivered as an 'all staff' conference day. The programme is structured around the themes identified in the Diamond Lesson Plan which is available for download from our homepage. Each step is covered with practical examples of how to raise satisfactory teaching and learning to Ofsted grade one standards.
Developing observation skills
This one day course introduces new lesson observers to OFSTED and Lifelong Learning standards and to the skills of effective lesson observation. Ofsted has stated in the new 2009 inspection handbook that the Lifelong Learning standards will underpin inspectors' grading judgements. The course delivers a focus on the chief factors underpinning a Grade 3 satisfactory lesson and in particular how to make learning the focus of the observation. Time is taken to examine and absorb Ofsted and Lifelong learning criteria and to identify the key triggers for moving up or down the grading scale. Two DVDs provide observation practice and role play sessions are used to develop feedback skills.
This training may be followed by the optional validation of new lesson observers and the award of a certificate of competence.
Applying the Ofsted 2009 inspection framework
This course provides an update for experienced lesson observers on the new Ofsted 2009 inspection framework . Attention will be focussed on judging learning and ensuring that all individuals are making appropriate progress and with the right degree of challenge according to the course level. Guidance will also be given on the integration of equality and diversity good practice and what to look for and advise. Time will also be devoted to improving coaching skills to ensure that feedback is 'developmental' and helps staff to consider how to raise teaching standards to grade one. A customised programme can be developed to meet particular training needs. The same course is often very benefical for teaching staff to alert them to the application of Ofsted criteria plus an overview of effective practice. Note that there is an 'Update' circular on the 2009 inspection framework available for downlaod. Go to 'update publication' top-right of the homepage.
Challenging behaviour
Some of our students exhibit challenging behaviour either in a direct disruptive manner or in a series of low level but exhausting challenges to progress within the lesson. The result is the significant loss of learning time because the teacher's attention is regularly diverted to dealing with poor behaviour.
This course identifies the key areas for action to build and sustain better behaviour from the induction course forward. The starting point is a clear learner contract coupled with consistent team enforcement to set a culture of expected behaviour and social norms. However, most of the course deals with practical guidance on classroom management, diffusing tension, avoiding confrontation and how best to handle disruptive learners.
Preparing for Inspection
This training programme is aimed at senior and middle managers and especially the College Nominee to review readiness for inspection with a critical eye over preparations, base room documentation, handling meetings with inspectors, actions during the inspection and how to ensure that questions and lines of enquiry are anticipated and managed well. The exact content of the programme can be discussed and agreed in advance to reflect your own priorities. The trainer is Caroline Hadlow who was a very experienced College Nominee and can offer a host of practical suggestions for a smooth inspection experience.
Satisfactory to outstanding?
This course has three main elements as summarised in the update publication 'Satisfactory to outstanding' available for download in the updates section of the website. The first element is a detailed analysis of Ofsted 2005-09 inspection reports and associated data in terms of outstanding practice. The seond element is a focus on the 'skill set' of outstanding teachers and how to buil dand apply the skills. The third element is a focus on the 'impact strategy' i.e. the six main aspects of outstanding practice that will make a difference and lift satisfactroy or good to outstanding. An summary of the 'impact strategy' is in the update circular mentioned above. This is a very useful course for all those responsible for coaching and improving teaching and learning and of course individual teachers.
